New Website for Free Printables

Hello everyone :)

Just a quick note to let you all know I've set up a new website (Google Sites) for all the - over 100! - printables I've created over the past couple of years.  It is much, much more organized than the blog page that you had to scroll through previously.  I hope you find it user-friendly!  The url is https://sites.google.com/site/learningbyheartprintables/, and there is even a cute little button for it over there in the left sidebar.  I've named it Learning by Heart since that's the title I've used for all our learning posts.

In other news, I've been on and off of bedrest with this little one, who is due sometime this month.  Currently I am on strict bedrest (again, after being off for 2 weeks) with "mild pre-eclampsia".  So, this seemed like the perfect time to get a little computer/blog work done and what-do-you-know I actually finished this website project! :)

I have a couple of other exciting news items to share with you all (including baby's arrival at some point), but want to get all my ducks in a row first.  Enjoy the new printables website and let me know what you think of it!

Have a beautiful day! :)

Too Much To Do (or a lazy mom whines)

“I used to think that we can have almost anything we want from life, that it’s just a question of organization.  But now I’m beginning to think that we have to make a choice more often than we’d like.  The important thing is to make sure that it’s our choice, no one else’s, and that we make it honestly.”
- Adam Dalgliesh in Death of an Expert Witness, by P.D. James

I just can. not. fit it all in.

After being sick most of December and having some set backs in January, I have been feeling overwhelmed with the daily stuff that life is made of.  I want to blog… but then when it comes down to it, I’d rather read a good book, soak in the tub, or stare at a blank wall.

I keep thinking I need to write in my journal for M – all these things I want to remember – things I want him to remember – words of wisdom… that sort of thing.  But well, when it comes down to it… it just hasn’t been happening.  (I hope that doesn’t make me a bad mother, because I’m afraid this is just the way it’s going to be for a while.)

I’m trying to organize some trouble spots in our home, our time, and the two pack rats I live with.  Or trying to at least live with them without going crazy.  Ok, more honestly, trying to figure out how to throw things away without them noticing. ;)

I’ve been rediscovering my passion for sewing and crocheting and creating beautiful things with my hands.  I’ve even taken up loom-knitting.  I am a crocheter through and through, but I do understand that a knitted something-or-other is nice to have sometimes too. ;)

I’m trying to work out the struggle inside that I’m having with facing these final months of small-childhood for M… the last of our days completely together; this time when I can see so clearly into his heart and mind.

I’m in the process of opening an Etsy store (don’t hold me to this, I’m only mentioning it in the hopes that it will actually make me work on it), revamping my blog, and creating a new site to house the free printables I offer.  I’m working on an Easter e-book with a friend, and creating some reading helps for M’s “school time”.  I’m putting together a space unit and an ocean unit, and thinking about plans for learning about how the human body works.

I think there are some reviews I’m supposed to be working on too.

And then there are friends, family, daily housekeeping, raising a small boy who wants my every minute, errands, and social events.

Sheesh.  But seriously, how do you make choices to not do some of these things?   They all seem so necessary… or else are things I really enjoy!  I’ve realized that I’m so busy trying to organize everything into something manageable that I’m losing peace and joy in the struggle.  Sometimes choices have to be made!

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed?  How do you cut back, or even choose the areas in which to cut back?

There are so many interesting things I want to share with you, so I’m going to try to get back into blogging.  I’m hoping to share the basics of  the reading program we are going through, and our arts and crafts activities a couple of times a month.  I want to write about all the amazingly good books we’ve been reading and how we are fitting more books than ever into our days, our new chore system (new as in started 6 months ago, but just not written about yet), and lots of other things… look for some good announcements soon about a few of the things I’m working on. :)

Thanks for reading, and letting me vent (I am amazed to see that my readership has gone up over the past few months instead of down – you are all so appreciated!).

Here’s to getting back into the swing of things!

Have a beautiful day! :)

image

You can go vote for your favorite homeschool blog by clicking on the button above.  There are 20 categories in which to vote!

Tired, Need Sleep has been nominated for the Best Crafts, Plans and Projects Blog.  I am a little astonished by this considering my sporadic, at best, blogging this past year!  A big thank you and hug to anyone who took the time to nominate this little blog of mine.  I feel very honored. :)

The awards are a good opportunity to find more homeschool blogs; I hope you will take a few minutes to look over the lists, visit some blogs, and vote for your favorites!

Have a beautiful day! :)

Off Like a Herd of Turtles.

M riding an old trike at our farm "up north".That is one of my husband’s many pithy sayings.  I’m not sure where he got it, but he loves to say it with a cute little sarcastic smile that is trying oh-so-hard not to be a smile.  He’s awful at being sarcastic.  Too sweet-natured.  (Opposites attract, you know. ;) )

Anyway, this is my way of re-introducing myself into your cyber world.  I’m back!  Ye olde laptop is up and running once more and I’m faithfully backing up every little thing I do on it daily.  We did lose many months of pictures, but thankfully quite a few of our favorites were on my personal Facebook page for family and friends to see; so when we are old and gray the first 6 months of this year will not be a complete blank (still pretty sad about losing all the others though!).

Knowing how life is busy and days fly by, I’m sure many of you have not even noticed my absence; but it has felt like forever to me!

Now, the herd of turtles part… I’m not making any promises about how much I’ll be posting in the next few weeks, on account of the approximately 1027 other projects I took up in my spare, un-plugged free time this summer.  I have to see these to completion and that will take time.
I am also in the middle of planning school activities to begin next week, and I’m sure many of you know how time-consuming that can be.  To help, I’m using a variety of things as a sort of homemade curriculum to follow (mostly free, as I’m just not ready to pay real money for a preschool curriculum at this point.  Yes, I am thrifty down to my toes). I hope to post about all of this in more detail at some point…

And yes, I know I’ve mentioned how I’m not a curriculum sort of gal and M’s not a curriculum sort of guy and we like to just fly by the seat of our pants when it comes to learning, and I’ll just custom-make everything we need, and all that.

Ah well, I’ve never claimed consistency as one of my strong points.  :)

I hope to post at least once a week to cover our school activities, and eventually get on a more regular blogging schedule.

Have a beautiful day! :)

Free EBook over at Homeschool Classroom!

The Homeschool Classroom is giving away a free ebook for everyone who "likes" The Homeschool Classroom Facebook page!

This is an excellent ebook if I do say so myself (I am one of the contributing writers, hee hee). ;)

Please note: There is a limit of 100 downloads per day. So, if you go to download and the quota has been met, try again the next day.

You will find complete instructions for how to get your ebook here.  Enjoy!!

On another note, I'm really no closer to being back to regular posting than I was when I last posted (try saying that 3 times quickly).  And... I'm realizing that since the beginning of this year my  heart has not really been into my writing here.  I'm not sure what that means for future writing, but I guess I've got time to figure it all out... I will need a new laptop anyway before and if I begin regular posts again.  I refuse to take twice the time to post than is really necessary just because my pc is old and very, very slooooooow.  So, I'm taking advantage of all this free time to work on a few projects, some of which were mentioned in my New Year's post many months ago.  I just thought an update would be nice, even though it's just an "I don't know anything" kind of update. ;)  Thanks to those of you who have emailed me recently.  It's so nice to know I'm not completely forgotten. :)

Take care, and have a beautiful day! :)

Internet Detox – what I’ve learned

Well, I am still having computer-email-internet-wireless trouble.  Over the past 1 1/2 weeks it has gone from pretty bad to worse, to much worse, and then back to just pretty bad again. :)  I am waiting for our ISP to send us a new router and then my sweet husband will set that up, hopefully with no trouble, and I’ll be up and running again!

I have learned a few things during this unexpected detox period:

  1. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
  2. When one is in a state of frustration, it’s generally not the right time to go around pushing the factory “reset” button on every piece of computer hardware within one’s reach.
  3. Especially if one doesn’t know exactly how to reconfigure everything (see number 1 above).
  4. Sometimes I mentally narrate the inanities of my life in facebook speak. This annoys me.
  5. I do still know how to look up information with a real dictionary and/or encyclopedia.
  6. Somehow not having internet access for a few days makes my house cleaner.
  7. Email can be ignored and the world will not fall apart.
  8. Reading a book, sewing jammies and new pants for a sweet boy, making a new wreath for our home, going out with girlfriends, and singing Yankee Doodle over and over and over again with a 4 year old are all pretty nice ways of spending my time.
  9. If no one is reading what I am writing, it helps me remember that I enjoy writing just for the sake of writing.
  10. If I write blog posts away from an internet connection (thank you, Windows Live Writer), they get finished much more quickly, and I can write 5 posts in one evening.  (It has something to do with not playing sudoku and numbrix online between paragraphs.)

For the time being, I’m hooking myself up to our beast of a computer and scheduling out about a gazillion posts that I’ve written on Live Writer over the past week. :)  And then I’m going to go sing Yankee Doodle with M one more time.

Have a beautiful day! :)

Malware Warnings

A few of you have emailed me or left comments saying you’ve received malware warnings when trying to leave a comment or download one of my printables.  I just found out that this was caused by a blog roll link I had in the sidebar of my blog.  blogrolling.com, which was the site from which the coding came, apparently had a blog connected with it that did have malware, and somehow this caused other blogs with coding from blogrolling.com to give that same warning.  Whew.  Are you following me so far??

Anyway, all connections between blogrolling.com and my blog have been deleted, and I no longer have the blog roll on my sidebar.  Things should be just fine now!  There’s no malware connected to this blog or the downloads I’ve offered.

Thanks to those of you kind enough to bring this to my attention.  I wasn’t sure what was causing the problem until I read this post by Angie at Catholic Mothers Online.  It was awfully nice of her to figure the problem out! :)  Thanks, Angie!

Turning Over a New (fall) Leaf :)

So.  I’ve noticed lately that my blog is becoming one big commercial.  And I really don’t like that.  I don’t want this to be all about reviews and giveaways… I find that so boring!  I started this blog as a way to document what M does as he grows and the activities we do together, as well as a place for me to write about random stuff and work out my thoughts about various things.  But then – well, I started getting offers for free stuff, and that kind of thing is soooo hard for this thrifty girl to turn down!  :)  So, anyway, my plan from this point forward is to write no more than 3 posts about reviews and/or giveaways per month.  This should help me be a little more picky in choosing which offers to respond to.

Also, there’s a new look to the blog!  Check it out and tell me what you think. :)  Is it too dark?  Too crowded?  I decided to go back to a 3 column layout, and I’m happy with it this way, but would like a little feedback too.  I have these great seasonal prints, which I absolutely love,  that I got for free at a book sale and decided to use them and some digital scrapbooking elements to make my headers.  Should be easy to change it all up each season!  How nerdy is it that this gets me very excited? ;)

And, there’s a new blog button too!  If you have my button, delete that old thing, and come pick up the new one!

“Regular Programming” should be starting up here in the next week or so, with The Art Box on Mondays and our Preschool activities sometime during the week, as well as good books we’ve been reading!

Happy autumn (a bit early), everyone!

Have a beautiful day! :)

Blog Stuff…

Bear with me as I’ll be in and out of blogland for the next few weeks.  I’ll have some posts, but predict that they’ll be pretty sporadic.  I’m putting the Monday Art Box posts on hold for the next month or so – M is too busy enjoying summer to care much about it and that’s fine with me.  I think if his Art Box disappears for a while and then reappears once Minnesota cold starts setting in, it will be very popular once again. :)

I’m in the middle of some minor home remodeling that started with tearing up the living room carpet one morning (my husband  loves when I do this kind of thing – you can imagine just how much), and I’m trying to plan our preschool activities which we’ll be starting mid-September.  I want things fairly organized and ready to go so I’m not just winging it like I tend to do.  These two things are taking up any and all spare time I have.  And that’s not much now that M is going to bed later and hubby is home more evenings in the summer.  I love them very, very much, and am grateful that we are spending so much time together.  We’ll just leave it at that, shall we?

I have a million posts (really good posts!) swirling around in this head of mine, but none of them seem to be writing themselves.  ;)  Stick with me and sometime in September things should pick up again and be a bit more lively in my little corner of blogland.  Hopefully this will also mean that I’ll be able to read and comment again on some of my favorite, but neglected, blogs. :)

Have a beautiful day! :)

The Homeschool Classroom

The Homeschool Classrom

I was recently asked to begin writing a monthly post over at The Homeschool Classroom (I was told the inspiring Amy at Raising Arrows recommended me – thank you so much, Amy!).  My first post is over there today, so please go check it out.  I’m very honored to be a part of the great group of ladies there!

Happy Memorial Day

I hope everyone is having a very pleasant Memorial Day!

I’ve been missing around here lately, but everything is fine.  Life has just been… happening… and I haven’t been able to find a spare minute to put two thoughts together much less blog about them.  Thank you to those of you who have emailed with concerns, you all mean so much to me. :)

No Art Box today (or last week – oops!), but I do have some fun posts scheduled for the coming days, so stay tuned!

Have a beautiful day! :)

50 Best Blogs for Early Childhood

Well.  This may sound a bit like I’m tooting my own horn, but I’m just very excited about it and wanted to share it with all of you. :)

Online Degrees is a website “dedicated to helping students find the best accredited online college to pursue their associate's, bachelor's, or graduate degree.”  (Taken from their home page here.)

On top of this basic mission of Online Degrees, they have articles on education and a recently started blog where various aspects of education are discussed.

Their most recent article is titled “50 Best Blogs for Early Childhood” and Tired, Need Sleep is listed along with 49 other wonderful blogs!  I’m anxious to go check them out, and I hope you will too! :)

Thank you all for reading this silly little blog of mine… I’m continually surprised at how many real friends I’ve made through blogging.

Have a beautiful day! :)

Time for a Breather

I took a little week long blogging break before Christmas when my stress level was skyrocketing, and that one little week did so much for my perspective and peace of mind!  So, when the new year began, I resolved that I would take a week long break from the blog (and internet in general) every couple of months just to have time for all the *stuff* I ignore when I’m having fun blogging, thinking about blogging, planning to blog, reading blogs… you get the idea. ;)

Lent begins this week and so it seems like a good time for me to take a little break and, I don’t know… maybe clean the house, talk to my husband,  or some other crazy thing. :)  Really, it’s good for me to refocus and rethink my priorities on a regular basis so that’s what I’m going to do.   I’ll schedule out a MckLinky for the Art Box on Monday, and then I’ll see you all on Wednesday or Thursday.

I hope you all have a beautiful week! :)

Blog Stuff…

I have switched my comments settings so that all comments are now being moderated.  As soon as I read your comment I’ll publish it to the post. :)  I’m hoping this will cut down on some of the spamming.

I appreciate all your comments so much, and just wanted to let everyone know about this change.  Thank you!!

Tot School Re-Organization

I’ve been taking a break from Tot School posts the last few weeks, and honestly it’s felt good.  So good in fact, that I’ve been wondering if I should start them up again.  And then, I wonder what would be the point of my blog if I didn’t write about what we do in Tot School?  And then I re-read a lot of comments from previous TS posts and, well, I have to say comment-love is a powerful drug. ;)

Do your school re-cap posts each week take you forever  to write??  I’ve saved a tremendous amount of energy and time by not writing these posts… it’s really amazing actually.   Maybe it’s just me, but one TS post will take me an entire evening to write.  All the photo editing, photo organizing, linking to other sites, blah blah blah.  If you have any tips on making this simpler, I’m all ears!  Maybe it’s just that I’m a born talker, er rambler. :)

I am in the middle of assessing and re-thinking how we spend our TS time and how I have it organized.  This post will most likely be a lot of thinking out loud and more rambling.  So, bear with me.  :)

During my pre-Christmas blog break I created a “master list” spreadsheet of all our school items – anything we have that we use for school.  I tagged each item with a subject or skill area (or two), added notes, and a check  box to indicate whether or not it is an activity that M can do independently.  (Whether or not it’s something he enjoys doing independently is another matter altogether!)

So, here’s our new plan…

I’m going to set out 5 to 7 independent or minimal-mama-involvement activities for him each week, changing a few of them up during the week as he finishes the original ones (ie. cut and paste sheets).   Many of these will be things like his Melissa and Doug toys, fine motor skill projects, etc.

We also re-organized his space with the shelving.  The little cupboard on the lower right houses all our games now, and we are having many fun evenings as a family because of this easy access.  There are matching games, homemade games, card games, board games, dominoes, bingo, Barrel of Monkeys… just lots of fun stuff! :)  The top of the right side holds M’s ABC book, his ABC lapbooks, all our flannelboard sets, a file folder with activities related to our current theme, and our current sensory bin (not all of this is in the pic, sorry).blog pictures 005

On the left side, on the top are all his musical instruments (guitar to the side) and our songs and poems binder.blog pictures 002

Then, on the shelves below this are his current activities.  I will most likely keep the pipecleaner letters and sand tray on there all the time.  Other than that, the activities on the shelves will be featured on my weekly TS post.  However, because these are things that M will be doing on his own mostly, photos will pretty much be hit or miss.  I’ll try to take pictures of the actual activities, but catching him doing it is another matter.blog pictures 004

While we are talking about taking photos I should mention that I’ve decided to always ask M’s permission to take a picture of him doing our school things.  I think the poor kid feels a little pressured sometimes, or less important than the blog, when I’m constantly snapping pictures.  I’ve thought about this and I have to say I would not want someone taking my picture all the time as I’m trying to learn something new.  It’s so easy to forget to respect the fact that kids are little people with feelings too.  So, I’m working hard on this, and you may end up seeing fewer pics of M in my posts.

I’m also going to bring back our one morning a week that we spend about 1/2 hour together “doing” school.  We both used to love this time together.  But M was asking to “do school” all the time!  Hence, the activity shelves.  Yet, it’s not fair to M to set things out on the shelves for us to do together and then not find the time (right now!) to do them; not to mention it’s creating stress for me, what with running around trying to get chores done so I can do these things with M.

The other days I’m going to focus our time together on reading, music, sensory activities, baking, free-playing, art, and our fun science experiments.  Many of these will most likely have their own post if I post about them, and I’m not sure I’ll include them in my TS posts.  It would just be one more thing to link up to.

We continue to enjoy our calendar and Bible Story time together every morning as well as our quick “morning message”, and I want to make our Bible story activities  a priority over any other schoolwork each week.  So if I have a craft or game or whatever, planned to go along with a Bible story we’ve read, and we only have 20 minutes that week to do school together, then that’s what we’ll end up doing!

Whew.  Did I cover everything I want to do?  This is one of those posts that are mainly for me – so I can go back and read about exactly what I want to do and remember my priorities!  Thanks for hanging on to the end. :)  Any suggestions for making things simpler are always welcome!

Have a beautiful day! :)

What I want for Christmas – Confessions of a Mama-teacher ;)

imageI have a feeling a lot of moms out there who homeschool or do any sort of tot school or preschool at home with their kids are a lot like this (Dear God, please don’t let me be the only one)… I can’t think of a thing I want for myself for Christmas, but I could give you a list 5 pages long of things I’d love to have for M – toys that help him learn and develop many different skills while having fun.

I just love browsing through quality online toys this time of year; there are so many great things out there that would fit well with the activities I do with M.

I thought I’d share some great deals with you on some fantastic things I’ve found… and it’s a great way for me to remember what’s on my wishlist when a little extra $$$ comes my way.  (Oh, Santa ??)

Take a look at all these lacing cards and lacing activities.  They  have every shape imaginable, even some that are dot-to-dots at the same time.  Isn’t that brilliant?  M would love the construction and tool ones.  And such great prices!!

And here is a group of ABC and phonics center kits.  There are so many possibilities with these.  There’s even a math center kit, a sequencing story kit, and several science kits that I need to keep in mind for a couple of years from now.  I am practically drooling, hee hee. :)

So, now that you know all this, send me presents!  OK, that is just a joke. ;)  Please don’t send me presents.  But do take a look around the site and the pages I’ve linked to.  You’ll be seeing me post about this site again, and you may just get a little present yourself sometime soon. ;)  For fun, let me know which item would be on your wishlist.

Have a beautiful day! :)

I’m back… kinda, sorta. Well, ok – not really. ;)

Just wanted everyone to know the Art Box MckLinky will be up and running next Monday morning.  I know this is a busy time for everyone, and wanted to let you know early so you can write your Art Box posts if you want to, have the energy to do it, and some extra time on your hands, hee hee. :)

I’m scheduling out a Christmas-y Tot School post for Sunday, as well as a post for the other blog Monday morning.  But, Christmas on my husband’s side of the family is happening this weekend, so I won’t really be around much, and I’m not sure how great I’ll be about responding to emails and comments.

Merry Christmas, Everyone… I hope you all have a wonderful and very blessed time with your families!!!

Real Life is Calling…

Screaming actually, for me to pull my nose away from the computer screen and pay attention to it.

I’ve known for a while that I need to take a break, but was hoping to put it off until after the New Year; this is just such a fun time of year to be blogging.

BUT, as it turns out my little break will have to begin now.  I don’t anticipate it lasting longer than a week or two, but we’ll see.  Blogging has been such a great creative outlet for me, as well as motivation to create fun activities to share with M (and you!).  I’m having so much fun and it really is a hobby that gives me energy for other things… most of the time.

Lately however, I’m finding less time to get anything done.  As you probably know, thanks to my many laments about this, M stopped napping a long time ago.  However, up until recently he was still having quiet/rest time.  Now he won’t do this unless I’m resting with him (which on one level is really, really great since I am tired most of the time, lol), but obviously if I am resting, I can’t be trying to get 100 things done in the half hour he’s down.

At this time of year too, my husband isn’t as busy in the evenings (normally he has 1 to 2 meetings per week in the evenings – built in “me” time after M goes to bed), so that means I’m pretty much on call all the time.  What little free time I have right now needs to go towards other things.  I realized this today when some simple cleaning chores had me growling and grumpy, and taking it out on my sweet little boy.  I need time to work on some projects, get my priorities straightened out, and organize this house before it drives me nuts.  Seriously, I’m nervous about the influx of new *stuff* we’ll be bringing into our home in about 2 weeks!  I’m going to work on organizing toys and school supplies… out with the old to make room for the new.

I’ve recently received a few very kind and sweet emails from new readers… I’m so thrilled to hear from you!  This is the hardest part of taking a break – not getting to interact with all the wonderful people I’ve “met” in the blogging world.  If you are new here, rest assured I will be stopping by your sites to visit as soon as I can – I LOVE meeting new friends and reading new (to me) blogs.  And I will be back blogging up a storm here as soon as possible.  In the meantime, feel free to look around the archives!

How is it I can never say what I want to say in less than 5 paragraphs??  Anyway, I’m off to catch up on emails and my google reader before I switch off my beloved laptop.  ;)  Then onto real life

Have a beautiful day! :)
