MaryAnn Kohl: The Importance of Art in Early Childhood, Part 3

~Part One is here~   ~Part Two is here~

***Enter to win a copy of MaryAnn Kohl’s book, Scribble Art!
Rules for entering are at the end of this post.***

Here is a little collage I put together of just a few of the projects we’ve done that were taken from Scribble Art:

collage 1. Salty Watercolors (like magic!)

2. Painting with a variety of things, mixing colors, gluing things on (so much fun!)

3. Dipping colored chalk in white paint and drawing on black paper

4. Drawing with our homemade “scribble cookies” (shaped like Christmas trees)

5. Painting with melted crayons (one of our favorites!)

Whoever wins this book is in for such a treat!! :)

Art versus Crafts

Here is the third and final question I asked of MaryAnn:

3. Is it truly important to do "art", where a child simply enjoys the process, with no expectations placed on what the finished product will look like; instead of  making "crafts" where a finished product is the goal?  Don't crafts help develop a child's creative side and give them a final product that they can be proud of?

MARYANN:  I love art and I love crafts too, but they are very different. It is art where a child learns to trust his own thinking and finds out how art materials behave and learns to control them, all within his own power. It is art that holds the unknown and the excitement of discovery and exploration. Crafts are fun and teach skills like following directions and give a child an activity that has a product that may work around a theme like Fall Leaves or Dinosaurs, and all of that is good. Children are often proud of crafts they have created, though sometimes their final products fall short of the sample they were shown and they can feel disappointed too. With art, they are the only judge of a final product, but truly, it is the learning and the exploring that has the most value, that is, the process of experiencing art. The final product is like a road map of what occurred, not the reason for the exploration. So yes, do a craft, and yes, do art!

MaryAnn wrote the following to me at the conclusion of our interview, and I think this may just be the most important message of all:

MARYANN: I'd like to explore what makes art special a little further: Children express themselves through art on a fundamental level. Sometimes their artwork is the manifestation of that expression, but more often, the physical process of creating is the expression. Picture the toddler who has a new baby sister busily pummeling his fists into Play-Doh; a six-year-old joyfully painting flowers with huge arm movements blending, reds and yellows; a ten year-old drawing a portrait of her grandmother who recently passed away. Creating art allows children to work through feelings and emotions, and referring to a finished piece of artwork helps a child talk about feelings in a new and meaningful way. Art also develops a child's creativity. Rather than being told what to do, answers and directions come from the child. Art is an experience that requires freethinking, experimentation, and analysis -- all part of creativity. And it is the creative person who develops his thinking process so that he can become an adult who can think, who is not afraid to try new things and new ways of solving problems and making the world a better place.

Thank you so much, MaryAnn, for taking the time to share your thoughts and knowledge with us.  I hope my readers have enjoyed this; I’m very grateful for the awareness you work so hard to bring to educators and parents regarding why art is so important.  Children seem to intuitively know this already, and now I can better understand why they love art so much!

Music CD Giveaway! God’s Words from A to Z - GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

imageI was recently contacted by Liza Philips of philipmusic.com and asked to review their new CD for children,  God’s Words from A to Z.  We love this CD!  There are 26 songs – which are 26 scripture verses set to music.  Sounds simple, right?  But, oh, the music!  These are very catchy tunes,  with an enormous variety of styles.  Everything from rock to bluegrass, jazz to indian to celtic… it’s amazing!
I like that each song is simply the words of the verse sung over and over – it’s very much like a meditation on the words of the Bible, and set to beautiful music this way, you and your children will find yourselves memorizing scripture verses without even trying.  This CD started out as a way for the Philips to help their children learn Bible verses, and fortunately for us, it turned into something much bigger.  The Philips are a married couple with 3 children; they have been writing songs and hymns (with “depth and passion”) for the past 10 years.  Check out their other CDs here.
I am so thankful to Liza for sending us this beautiful and wholesome children’s CD, and they are graciously offering to give a CD to one of my readers. :)
Leave a comment to enter the giveaway, and I’ll pick a winner on Monday, September 13th.  Good luck!!

CSN Giveaway! - CLOSED

CSN has anything and everything you could want in over 200 hundred online stores.  Anything from lights to library shelves, or toys to tables. :)  They’ve got it.  I love CSN stores.  If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t have been able to provide so many high quality, educational, and fun toys for M for his birthday (coming up soon!).  Their prices are very competitive and the selection is unbelievable.  And, I have to say, they’ve got the best customer service!  I’ve been waiting to review a product from them because the wagon I wanted was unavailable, and after a couple of weeks they emailed me a 15% off coupon to use on a purchase… just because I had been waiting!  I can honestly say they’ve got my business and loyalty.  They are the first place I go now to find good prices on what we want and need.

Now for the really good part - I have a $60.00 gift certificate to give away to one lucky reader! :)  This giveaway is open until midnight next Thursday, August 26th.  I’ll announce the winner on August 27th.  For your first mandatory entry, you must be a subscriber or follower of Tired, Need Sleep, and leave a comment letting me know.

Extra entries (leave a comment for each one):

  1. Blog about this giveaway

Good luck, everyone!!

Construction Toys – Review and Giveaway!

The great people at CSN Stores sent me the following 3 construction toys to review.  Their shipping was super fast and I’ve had no problem with their customer service.  One other product is on back order and they’ve been keeping me up to date on a regular basis, which is so much nicer than having to call or email them!

imageFirst off, something I’ve wanted to get M  for a long time – a set of magnetic construction pieces.  There are several to choose from, but I opted for this one because the pieces stick together well and there’s enough in this small set to keep a him happy and interested for a long time.  There are very small pieces, so this is definitely not a toy for someone still in the “put everything in my mouth” stage.  There are a lot of other sets made by Magz that we’ll be adding to this one as we go through birthdays and Christmases… it’s great to have sets like this that can grow along with your child and hold their interest as they get older.  M is fascinated with magnets, and this is a fun way to let him explore the many things magnets can do!

imageimageWe also received two other construction sets – a box of Duplo blocks, and a Kid K’nex Railroad Pals set.  We already have many small Duplo sets to go with this 33 piece one, and M LOVES playing with these.  They are the perfect size for his hands and while they work those fine motor muscles, they aren’t so tiny that he finds it frustrating.  And Kid K’nex – well, what can I say?  We all love them.  We bought a set of Kid K’nex Buddies for M for Easter and we all had a blast putting them together and making all kinds of interesting creations.  And the great thing about this new set (Railroad Pals)?  It is compatible with Duplo!  Some of the pieces for the trains are similar to Duplo blocks and sure enough, they fit together.  So now we have a fantastic collection of various building materials to use in just these two sets!

Now, for the giveaway part. :)  I am going to send one winner a set of 56 Magz, just like ours pictured above.  These are for ages 5 and up, but I feel comfortable letting my soon-to-be 4 year old play with them under supervision.  The contest is open to U.S. addresses only. (I know.  Sorry!)

To enter, leave a comment below letting me know your favorite construction toy.  For an extra entry follow me (or let me know you are a follower/subscriber), and leave a comment letting me know.  For another extra entry, blog about this giveaway, then leave me a comment with the post url.

I’ll be picking a random winner on June 23rd!  Make sure to leave me an email address so I can reach you!

Have a beautiful day! :)

What’s in the Bible Blog Tour – Review and Giveaway!!

WebBanner_300x250_WITB

THIS GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED.

I recently received the first two episodes of this new series from Tyndale Publishers. The series, which is called “What’s in the Bible?” was created by Phil Vischer who also created the wildly popular Veggie Tales series.

The episodes are fast moving and have fun, quirky characters that will draw children in. Phil himself is in each episode too, answering various questions that arise about the Bible.

It’s a bit like a lesson on the Bible itself – how we got it, who determined which books would be in it, etc. And then a story from the Bible itself; The first episode’s Bible story is the creation of the world, the fall, and Noah’s Ark. The Bible story in the second episode is about Moses and the Exodus of God’s people from Egypt.

There are some parts of the stories that I felt were inappropriate for someone my son’s age (3 1/2). This isn’t because anything was done improperly by the writing team, but simply because some of the scenes of the Bible (such as Joseph being sold, Abraham about to offer Isaac as a sacrifice, etc) are something a 3 year old can not comprehend without being terrified. Also, the “lesson” about the Bible at the beginning of each episode is a bit over a preschooler’s head, in my opinion.

I think children 5 years and older would love these dvds, and I highly recommend them for that age.
Thank you to Tyndale for providing me with this review copy free of charge.

See more about this fun new series at the What’s in the Bible? website. There is a trailer here. And some coloring pages here

Here’s the great part… Tyndale has sent me two certificates for free dvds to give away to my readers!! Because there is one certificate for the first episode, and one certificate for the second episode, I’m giving them both to one winner! :) Only US and Canadian entries, please (sorry!).

To enter, leave a comment below – this is the mandatory first entry.

For extra entries…

Subscribe to Tired, Need Sleep or Follow and let me know in another comment.

Post about this giveaway on your blog and leave another comment letting me know.

Guidecraft “3-D Feel and Find” – Giveaway!!

image
We recently received this toy from CSN Stores’ online toys site, and boy, was it a hit with both myself and M! It’s perfect for developing his sense of touch as well as a sense of size and space.
I have to be honest, there are not a lot of pictures to go with this post, which is a little disappointing because I’d love to share with you how much fun we had with this. However, it is something M needed assistance with, and it’s hard to hold a bag with a 3 year old’s crazy hand in it, and take a picture at the same time. :)
First of all, I love the look of the toy’s pieces – all the shapes are made from wood and painted in bright colors. There are 20 shapes in all and 20 wooden tiles to match them to. Everything seems to be very well constructed! The wooden tiles have the shapes cut into them and the recessed area (and backing for the wood) is textured hardboard. A cloth drawstring bag is included for playing “Feel and Find”.
However, I just knew at first look that there would be many great possibilities for playing with this toy.
First we set the tiles out in rows and M matched the shapes to them:blog pics 168 As you can see there are several animal shapes and several geometric shapes; there are also two people shapes (one is a bit more “robust” than the other) and two tree shapes (a narrow one and a wide one).
We talked about each shape and identified the animals and other shapes by name.
Then we began playing with the wooden shapes in the drawstring bag and the tiles in a stack. He picked a tile from the top, then reached into the bag to see if he could *feel* the correct shape. M was very, very excited about playing the game and eager to get everything perfect. However, with 20 fairly unfamiliar shapes in the bag, it was a pretty challenging game for him (which is a good thing, since it means we will get a lot of use out of this as his skills develop!). So, remembering to set him up for success, I decided to change things up a bit before any discouragement or frustration set in, by sorting the pieces into three groups of shapes and tiles.
We grouped all the animals together, the two people and two trees were grouped together, and the third group was all of the geometric shapes.
Then, beginning with the small group of trees and people, we took time to look at each one and note the different characteristics. Then we stacked the tiles, put the 4 shapes into the bag and proceeded to play “Feel and Find”. :) M did a fabulous job! And his confidence soared! We continued the same way with the other two groups and handed out high fives each time he found the right shape. We were laughing, M was excited, and we were having a great time. We spent about 45 minutes total with this our first time, and it felt like time flew by. We’ve played several fun games since then!
Once he is familiar with the toy and knows all the shapes, I want to play a game with him using just the tiles. Since they are textured, I’d like to have him close his eyes while I set a tile in front of him. Then, using just his fingers (eyes still closed or possibly blindfolded), I’ll have him feel the textured area and see if he can guess which shape it is. This is only one of my ideas for extension activities with this toy. :) It’s such a great way to get a good sensory workout.
And, the wooden shapes all stand up on their own, and would be fun for creative play time too – I’m thinking of building block play or adding them to sensory tub playtime. As his fine motor skills develop they’d also be great to use for tracing around and then drawing in details. (You knew I’d find something artsy to use them for, didn’t you?)
Oh my goodness, I have a feeling you’ll be seeing a lot of this toy in our Tot School posts! ;)
Ok, thanks for reading such a long post… but here’s what you are really waiting for… the GIVEAWAY portion. ;) CSN Stores is graciously giving away an award-winning Guidecraft “Feel and Find” toy to one of my readers!
This giveaway contest will begin now and end at midnight (CST) on Thursday, and is open only to US and Canadian readers. On New Year’s Day I’ll announce the winner! Be sure to check back here to see if it’s you! If I don’t hear from the winner within 24 hours of posting, I’ll pick someone else.
Rules for entries:
1. Mandatory first entry – go to CSN Stores’ online toys site and pick your favorite game, puzzle, or creative play toy, then come back here and let me know what it is in a comment.
2. For an extra entry, write a post on your blog about this giveaway and link to this post as well as to the online toys site (and leave another comment).
